Biomarkers Inventory

The ESR EIBALL Subcommittee’s Biomarkers Inventory is designed to provide a reference for researchers and trialists, listing what biomarkers exist and what evidence for their use exists, so that these biomarkers can be incorporated into clinical trials so as to start building an evidence base.

What is an imaging biomarker? A biomarker is a measure: a characteristic that is objectively measured and evaluated as an indicator of normal biological processes, pathogenic processes, or pharmacological responses to a therapeutic intervention (NIH definition, 1998). An imaging biomarker is a biological feature, or biomarker detectable in an image. In medicine, an imaging biomarker is a feature of an image relevant to a patient’s diagnosis.

The inventory has been developed by EIBALL committee members in conjunction with QIBA representatives on the EIBALL Subcommittee. Furthermore, the EIBALL Subcommittee has worked with specialist European Societies to refine input: the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR), European Society of Paediatric Radiology (ESPR), European Society of Urogenital Radiology (ESUR), and the European Society of Breast Imaging (EUSOBI). Additionally, the EIBALL Subcommittee is currently working with representatives from the European Society of Cardiovascular Radiology (ESCR), the European Society of Head & Neck Radiology (ESHNR), and European Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology (ESMRMB) to expand the inventory.
